opinions wanted...

ok, so i figure in the next couple months we'll start buying some diapers, wipes, etc. so that we have a stockpile when baby comes and are able to spread some of those initial expenses over a few months instead of having to buy everything all at once.

So, what do you experienced ones recommend in terms of diapers? Huggies vs. pampers? store brand? What have you found to be the best value and "uesability"?

Any difference in baby wipes?

Anything else i should be thinking about in terms of stocking up on basic supplies?

I would definitely go with Huggies or Pampers. The Superstore brand (Teddy's choice) or Walmart Brand (Parent's choice) work okay for the daytime, but do not hold as much, so overnight our kids used to leak through. Also, we never tried the generic brands when they were tiny, tiny and with liquid, explosive poops everytime. For my big, fat kids, Huggies seemed to fit a bit smaller. So, once they outgrew size 5 Huggies, we'd by size 5 Pampers. So, I guess Pampers fits a bit wider. I've never noticed much of a difference besides that in the two. And we don't usually by the "supreme" versions unless they're really on a good sale. I don't htink it makes too big of a difference.

My favourite wipes are the Shoppers Drugmart Life brand wipes. They're very soft and you can get them in sensitive or aloe or scented. They're my first choice and when you get them on sale (I always stock up) they're not THAT much more expensive.

I'll try to think of other basics soon... my drum student will be here any minute.

Pampers Swaddlers (it has to be swaddlers and not just regular pampers) are by far the best diapers out there for new babies. The come in size newborn, 1 and 2. I always shelled out the cash for those when my babies were little because they are so soft on newborn skin. The regular pampers and huggies I found so harsh. Once my kids outgrew size 2 I moved over to the Teddy's Choice brand which have always worked just fine for us. You just have to make sure you move up to the next size earlier rather than later because otherwise you end up scrubbing poop out of everything because it shoots out the back of the diaper!

Personally we used cloth diapers. After 6 months of use they are paid for and then you are diapering for free. We have never had any leak through like you hear, and when you change them you put the diaper in a pail of water and vinigar untill it's full and you dump the whole bucket into the washing machine and wash as normal.
However, we still use disposible when we are out of the house and I only use the Pampers. When I have used noname stuff (Teddys or Parents choice) it always gave all my kids diaper rash, leaked and it was relly hard on thier skin.
Wipes I always use Huggies as to me they seem to be more "wettier" to clean up those messy diapers.

I agree with Shannon: Pamper Swaddlers until Baby outgrows them. Not only are they wonderfully soft, but they seemed to hold things the best. Even now that Jared has solid poops, we still like the brand-names better. At the beginning, Pampers over Huggies, now it doesn't matter. Costco has good wipes, and they come in huge cases. Huggies wipes are the other ones we like.
My advice about stocking up would be to be careful not to buy too many diapers, especially of the smaller sizes. You don't know what size your baby will be - I bought a few packs of Newborns, and Jared never wore them. He was too big; he started in size one's. And he grew so fast that he wasn't in those very long either, so I was glad that I didn't buy too many. Of course, you want to have at least one pack on hand, although the hospital does supply them during your stay, and just so you know, my token hospital-visit gift is a pack of Newborn Swaddlers. There, I ruined the surprise when Baby is born...
Poop tip of the day: if poop stains don't come out in the wash, lay the soiled piece out in the sun for the day (doesn't have to be outside!) and the stain should disappear! Also, Amaze is a great pre-wash soaker.
Lynette, we need to get together, it's so much easier to talk about my experience than type it all out. I'm calling you right now.

Diapers: I agree with Shannon; we liked Pampers Swaddlers, then moved to Teddy's Choice (regular, not supreme). Teddy's Choice are cheaper than name brand diapers on sale!

Wipes: I have to admit I haven't tried that many brands. Our second baby was allergic to some wipes, and she was fine with Teddy's Choice unscented, so we have stuck with that. (We like the pop-up tub, not the reach in kind.)

Nursing pads: I used Johnson & Johnson; they are nice & soft. I was allergic to Gerber. After a few weeks when I didn't need to change the pads every single hour, I switched to Avent cloth nursing pads (for at home anyways).

Soother: We used Avent silicone. Avent because it is best for breastfed babies, and silicone because it is more hygenic and releases less toxins. (I am currently reading a book on this subject, but I can't find the page right now to give you the reference. Sorry!)

Baby shampoo & lotion: Can be a very personal choice. I highly recommend going to the website www.ewg.org This website tells you the safety rating of almost every brand and kind of product. It assesses all the ingredients in each product for you, many of which are unregulated, poorly tested and/or carcinogenic.

Click on "skin deep: health & beauty brands", then you can either enter the product name of the product you are using or thinking about using, or, you can click on a type of product. For example, you can click on "skin care", then click on "baby lotion", then click on "products: lowest concern", and it will give you quite an exhaustive list. Many mainstream brands are quite safe, but mostly obscure brands are the safest. I have been able to find quite a few at Herbs 'n' Health on Broadway and at London Drugs.

As you can tell, my obsession as of late is toxins! But, I won't hold it against you if you don't share my passion!

Good luck!

I recommend you do not stock up on diapers. Every baby is different and different brands will work for you. It will suck if you stock up on a brand that works poorly for your little one. Whenever I have problems with leaking, usually a different brand or going up in size works. That is another thing, your baby may only stay in the newborn size for a very short period, you don't want to stalk up and then your baby outgrows them.

The brand that works for me, is the walmart brand, Parent's choice. the Newborn size wasn't good for Hayden, but the upper size works great and the value is defenetly the best. You can't get them cheaper anywhere else (that I know of). Generally, I wish I could never shop at walmart, but once you become a parent you realize that they defenitly have the best prices for baby stuff.

Hey Lynette,
This is Lindsi Gross (formerly Traill). I changed about 25 diapers a day working in Infant care last year. Huggies...no good. Don't hold anything in, and the waist band isn't comfy enough. Pampers or Costco diapers (they're thick and cozy).
We're having a baby girl June 7th!!! Hope I am able to post this.
